E-BOOK-PRINT BOOK INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS
for "e-Book" Publishing on the Internet and Print publishing of Paperbacks
As one of the services GLB Publishers provides for
gay, lesbian, and bisexual writers, an "e-Book" publishing section of the
Web site has been set up for Internet publishing of manuscripts (e-Books)
for downloading instead of the printed book form. The concept is to provide
gay, lesbian, and bisexual fiction and non-fiction for download to readers'
computers at a very low cost. Outright pornography is not accepted, but "literate
erotica" is encouraged, as well as non-erotic subjects.
At the present, the reader/buyer is charged $1.00 for
a downloaded short story (2000 to 6000 words), $3 - $4.00 for a downloaded
novella (10,000 to 40,000 words), and $7.00 to $8.00 for a novel (usually
at least 60,000 words). Non-fiction and anthologies are evaluated on a
case-by-case basis. If the author is interested in making a color graphic
of a unique "cover" available, the reader also pays $1.00 to download that
file. All files are handled by secure Internet mechanism with credit card
charging or by check. The author receives a royalty of 50% of payments received.
Downloads are made available to the reader in seven - eight different
formats (formatted for downloading for printing and binder storage by the
reader or loading into reader devices). Adobe Reader is made available at
no charge for the purpose of reading PDF files where fonts and formatting
are preserved. Files can be printed out by any computer printer.
No fee is charged the Author to make his/her work available
on the Internet site. If work is necessary to make the manuscript acceptable
for computer entry and uploading, there will be a nominal charge for work
performed. E.g., if the work must be scanned for computer entry, there is
a charge of $2.00 per page (direct expense). Manuscripts available as a Windows
file on Windows disks in almost any standard word processing program will
not usually require extra effort.
The design of cover graphics is more expensive. There
is a charge of $500 for designing and preparing an original, full color graphic
of approximately 5" x 8" for download. The graphic will attempt to
reflect the characters/plot/setting of the work when feasible, and can be
printed out with any color printer. We do not use standard templates or uniform
approaches to covers. The author's suggestions and opinions are considered
and incorporated into the design if that is desired.
Copyright of the work is the responsibility of the author,
and registering of copyright is strongly recommended. The copyright to the
graphic remains with the artist or publisher who commissioned the work. Because
of the nature of the Internet and the simplicity of distributing copies of
the work by purchasers, some unauthorized copying is likely. The copyright
is the Author's best defense against unauthorized and illegal use. The low
cost of the downloads also tends to discourage illegal copying.
As an added feature, we are also able to make these works
(full novels, collections, non-fictions, and poetry volumes) available in
printed form under the Combined Options arrangement. In addition to availability
for downloading the work to personal computers, the printed book can also
be ordered and received in a very short turn-around time (a matter of days).
In this option, the art work required is more extensive and requires an
additional $200 to develop the entire paperback cover plus $100 to layout
the book in its entirety (total of $800) , but there are no additional
requirements. Another major advantage of this option is that the printed
book then is added to the print book inventory of GLB Publishers with all
the attendant promotion and increased availability via wholesalers and
distributors to book stores worldwide. With this option, copyright of printed
books is performed for the author by the publisher, in the author's name,
of course. This option is handled through a different contract for the combined
approach and the royalty rate remains at about 50% of the net received by
the publisher (list price minus cost of printing, shipping, and promotion).

While we expect the work to be in good shape when submitted,
we do much more than superficial editing to bring possible problems in the
text to the attention of the author. If the work shows promise but needs
revision, we provide advice and review for these improvements. It is also
important to obtain reviews of the work before releasing it, and considerable
effort is expended to obtain these reviews. We are serious about helping
the author to put her/his best foot forward. Graphic design requires more
time and, since we generally obtain reviews of works before they are released
for promotional purposes, some additional time is required to complete all
those tasks.
A few words about submissions: whether you submit as
an attachment to email (usually OK if a standard word processing program
was used) or in printout or both, please include a cover letter with
your name, pseudonym if any, address, and email address with each submission
so the manuscript does not get lost without a home if an accident might
happen.
Work begins immediately after signing the contract with
GLB Publishers. Please call or
e-mail if there are questions.
