Reviews:
The world of a gay, English schoolboy: boarding schools, social acceptance,
and intense, erotic liaisons. In the vein of the queer, English schoolboy
stories of the earlier 20th century, author Chris Kent reacquaints fans of
the genre to a modern, sexually charged tale of adolescent lads in The
Ram Stam Boys.
Originally published as an Internet e-book five years
ago, the newly printed edition of The Ram Stam Boys offers
the same erotically stylistic voice fans of Kent have grown to adore in his
previous works (The Boys of Swithins Hall, The Real Tom Brown's School
Days, Boys In Shorts, Boys Will Be Boys). Yet, Kent's latest novel introduces
a modern edge that revolves around a pubescent rock 'n' roll band.
Centering the plot is 16-year-old Guy Tilson, a third
year student at the English boys' school known as Abertay. Although Guy is
a teenager, his comical sarcasm and sexually active lifestyle immediately
establish him as a mature young man who seeks to solidify his future (along
with his sexuality).
Upon arriving at Abertay, Guy meets a new third year
student named Peter Parker (no relation to the alter ego of the comic book
superhero in the tight, red and blue spandex outfit). Though Guy finds Peter
attractive, he is bemused by his sexual orientation and doesn't want to scare
Peter away. Another newcomer to Abertay is the young first-year student,
Michael Fletcher. Though Guy is practically three years Michael's senior,
he can't help but want to seduce the lad. (At one point, Guy struggles with
the judgment of being a 15-year-old pedophile.)
At the crux of The Ram Stam Boys is the
band by the same name consisting of Guy, Peter, and Tony Honeyman (the
headmaster's naughty son and Guy's fuck buddy). The heart and soul of The
Ram Stam Boys is their performance of cover songs (such oldies inspired by
Top of the Pops as "Jumpin' Jack Flash"). Between expressing their teen angst
through their talents and sexually expressing themselves to each other, the
lads prove that they have no limits to their adolescence and act upon impulse
instead of thinking twice about their actions.
Kent blurs the boundaries of the modern coming
of age novel with The Ram Stam Boys, and lures readers with
a delectable journey into the erotic world on an English boys school. Chris
Kent's voice (spoken through Ram-Stammer Guy Tilson) provides an abundance
of sizzling imagery and adolescent sexy humor to surely leave one breathless
by the end of the novel's semester. The Ram Stam Boys
unquestionably substantiates that Kent is at the top of his game in the English
schoolboy genre. After reading it, one will be left eager to discover what
will be in store for Guy and the rest of The Ram Stam Boys in their next
school term!

Kent's Guy Tilson wonders if it is possible for a 15 year old boy to be a
"paedophile"? The boys said you couldn't be a Ram Stam boy if you were a
virgin... Later they had tea and buttered scones. The Ram Stam
Boys even surpasses Kent's previous hits (Boys of Swithins Hall,
Boys In Shorts, The Real Tom Brown's School Days, and Boys Will Be
Boys) in some ways because it is a little more contemporary, getting
the boys into the world of rock 'n roll, only part of which is in the bedroom.
A new favorite, that's for sure.
