What the reviewers are saying:
Originally published in 1992, Secret Buddies is wide-ranging
as a coming out novel, a novel about coming out, and a novel about coming.
In its second edition, Mike Newman's steamy novel anticipates grabbing the
attention of a new generation of gay erotica readers.
Secret Buddies tells the story of a hot
and hung Billy as he sets out to find his true sexual orientation on a trip
to the mountainous country of Idaho with a group of co-worker forest
firefighters. Among them are the rail-thin nerd, Stanley; the dominant Donnie,
any gay boy's dream; and, of course, the homophobe Steve, in all his brawn.
The milieu of a speckled and starlit sky, upon the curious darkness of a
surrounding woodland, creates a sexual tension among the four young, horny
men.
In Secret Buddies, Newman's compelling
first person narrative of his protagonist, Billy, is realistic and altogether
indulging. It may be relaxing for the reader to fall into the body of the
overeager character as he fucks and sucks his way through a campfire group.
Still, the reader feels the stress of the character as he discovers who he
truly is. The other characters of the novel test Billy's strengths and
weaknesses, as readers see Billy transform from young man to grown man.
Secret Buddies provides the grounds for
any gay man's wanton capricefour beautiful men in the middle of nowhere,
no holds barred. The realism and setting hypnotize the readers of Newman's
novel into revealing a caliber of men that realistically defy the supermodels
of any designer clothing ad. Whereas the plot of Secret Buddies
may be lacking, Newman's novel provides an all-out erotic extravaganza that
may serve the reader in other areas. The true "secret" in Secret Buddies
lies within the libido of the reader and how far he will go before
making it known.

---------------------
Innocence this raunchy is a rarity; sex this uninhibited is a delight.
There was scant erotica with as much wit, insight, or
true originality when Secret Buddies was published more than
a decade ago, and despite a flood of erotica since, this welcome second edition
of a remarkably sweet novel is as hot as they come.

-----------------------
Ah, there's nothing like the classics when it comes to good solid gay eroticism,
and Mike Newman's Secret Buddies is just the thing for a cold
winter's night's reading. First published in 1992 and now reissuedto,
I'm sure, the great satisfaction of those who missed it the first time
aroundSecret Buddies builds its action around a variation
on the ever-popular lumberjack theme: a group of forest workers/firefighters
in the mountains of Idaho.
There's the requisite cast of characters for a good fantasy:
the horny and hot hero, Billy; the skinny dork, Stanley; the musclebound
fag-hating Steve; and every gay boy's butch dream, Donnie. A firefighting
camp and its surrounding forest offer ample opportunities for lots of strenuous
male bonding and good wholesome horizontal fun.
Gay male erotica often, though unintentionally, does
us a disservice in that it seems every single character is endowed with equipment
that requires a yardstick rather than a ruler to measure. Therefore, brainwashed
(whether we realize it or not) by erotica, we tend to view ourselves, and
definitely the guys we hook up with for an evening's fun, as being somehow
inadequate in the jockstrap-filling department. Newman's characters, however
(with one notable exception), seem to be built like guys we actually know,
are, or have been to bed with. A refreshing touch of honest reality in a
still-highly-erotic book.

-----------------------------------
Secret Buddies by GLB Publishers is the re-issue of the erotic
novel from the 1990's. A young Carolina farm boy enters the summer world
of lumberjacks and forest rangers. Propelled by an overabundance of hormones
(he's 18 years old) and yearning for sexual freedom, he discovers that sex
can come in unexpected places...and so can love. Any writer who can come
up lines like "Erections are like yawns, they're contagious," and "No man
with a hard-on is a stranger" gets my recommendation.
