English School Boy Novel
The Real
Tom Brown's
School Days

by

Chris Kent

English school boys, their problems and their joys, have been described
most vividly in the last decade or two by Chris Kent, as evidenced by the popularity of his other
works, especially The Boys of Swithins Hall  and the short story collection,  Boys In Shorts
(available on this site from GLB Publishers). One of the classics of this genre has always been
Tom Brown's School Days.  It took Chris Kent to see through the Victorian hangups
and obfuscations in the original to set the story straight (so to speak) and give the real low-down, "the real story," or as we present it here, The Real Tom Brown's School  Days.

Reviews:

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and The Real Tom Brown's School Days is as real a labor of love as any in its charming parody of the original novel by Thomas Hughes. It is a delightfully evocative, provocative, and erotic tribute to one of the most famous literary depictions of boarding-school life in England.
That does not mean, however, that Hughes would have approved of this book. After all, it is also an unapologetically homoerotic work.
Nor is this a book for all fans of homoerotic fiction. This is one piece of pornography that definitely makes some demands of its readers — the first of which is a basic understanding of the English school system with its hierarchy of headmasters, masters, prefects, and plebes. Most of the humor and eroticism tends to revolve around this hierarchy which resembles the US Senate more than a US high school.
The reader must also be somewhat patient. Chris Kent does a remarkable job of teasing us into wanting these starched, young lads to misbehave. Tom Brown has many brushes with temptation before he actually figures out the riddles of his own sexuality. It is almost as though we are seeing the evolution of the boy into the man.
It is only through the luck of his parents inheriting money from a rich uncle that Tom is even able to attend Rugby Public School. However, once there he becomes a favorite of his teachers and his classmates.
Before long Tom is being ogled by the senior prefect (Robert Lawton), the English Master (Mr. J.P. Cornish), his best mate (Theo Rycroft) and pretty much everyone else at school. "This was a handsome boy who clearly would make an even more handsome man."
However, Tom is not the only one getting such attention. The study of Greek history is an honored pastime at Rugby School, and everyone seems very interested in the debauchery that goes with it. Some senior boys get together and get drunk while discussing Greek pederasty before trying it themselves. Soon the younger boys are experimenting with each other as well.
Mr. Cornish is doing little Peter Lane — and also doing the school chaplain on the side. In fact, Cornish is trying to do almost everyone. However, his lust finally gets the better of him.
The tales of carnality unfold in a torrent of piecemeal sex scenes. Yet there is a point to it all — and the culmination of all this sodomitic schooling makes for quite a dramatic climax (to the book.)
The Real Tom Brown's School Days is about as endearing an erotic story as we are likely to find. Hopefully, the author is considering a sequel about Tom's senior year.
