Kurt was a tall, lanky hustler, proud of his long money-maker and his street smarts, so when he was kicked out of his temporary haven it was only natural to turn to Maurice , a handsome black with a bootie to match, for sympathy. But with Maurice in that old Ford van in the alley off Polk Street and with some good pot, it was Kurt's bootie in question, and that was that.

I wasn't sure he would come to our tryst by the kidney-shaped pond, but suddenly there he was, in ancient sackcloth cut-offs and torn t-shirt, his skin the color of peanut butter. His words were confusing while at the same time redolent of ancient slave days and hangings. And when we took from each other, two immoral black boys pressed against the tree, the pond seemed to give up its spirits again.
