Our Approach to
Personal Publishing
As we use the term, Personal Publishing is defined as a service to individual
authors or groups to publish their work, usually in book form, as an independent
enterprise, the equivalent of assisted self-publishing. It is recognized
that there are many occasions when a publication is needed for specific purposes,
but commercial publishers may not be able to justify publishing the work
as a commercial venture for their company. While this has been called "vanity
publishing" in the past, this term has sometimes been associated with fraudulent
practices on the part of some vendors; we recognize that many of the reasons
for the need for such services are personal and we have adopted the term
"personal publishing" to cover those situations.
-
The outline of our approach is simple: We require a contract spelling
out the rights and duties of both parties, of course. All interactions with
all contributing professionals are arranged by the publisher.
We charge an initial fee of $500 to begin the process of collecting all the
elements needed for publication and for initial design of the work. If new
elements are needed or modifications in the work are required, the "author"
is notified and, if authorized, the publisher will arrange for the required
elements to be supplied to the work at the cost of $50 per hour. This is
performed in close relationship with the author, frequently with daily contacts,
carefully keeping the author informed at each step.
-
Estimates for printing the work are solicited and choice of the printer
is decided jointly with the author. The author must provide the entire estimated
cost of printing (including incidentals charged by the printer) at the time
the finished manuscript is sent to the printer. The printer's progress is
followed closely by the publisher and problems occurring at that stage are
handled as necessary. Unanticipated problems may require modest additional
hourly work by the publisher (unusual). We are equipped and experienced
in use of the most modern methods to suit the project.
-
Proofing can be performed by the publisher (at extra cost) or by the author,
and approvals of finished books by the author are required before completing
the task. Shipping and storage are the responsibility of the author, but
the publisher makes arrangements as necessary.
-
After completion of these final details, we charge an additional $350
for the work involved in the final stages as described. Spread sheets of
expenses and payments, receipts, and invoices are supplied to the author
as accounting evidence of his expenses for the project.
Some things we specifically do not do:
-
We do not take responsibility for fulfillment or storage of the books
or perform marketing or promotion of the work as a part of this operation.
-
We do not affix our imprint at any point on the book, but identify ourselves
indirectly by stating, on the copyright page: "PP Published for
------------."
-
We do not file the copyright application, but will assist the author in
doing so if desired.
Only if desired, we can supply an ISBN for the work under our Personal
Publishing generic organization for a fee of $25 each plus cost of film.
In summary, we can do the job for as little as $850, from manuscript-start
to book-finish, if all publishing details have been completed, but are willing
and capable of performing all other elements needed in publishing
your book to your specifications for your
marketing.
